Our story
Everything we make traces back to that week.
Two sisters, one flight to Italy, and a notebook we filled inside tanneries. Years later, every bag we make still starts from what we learned there.

It started with a bag we couldn't find.
In 2019 we went looking for one good leather bag, and we couldn't find it. The bags in our price range looked cheap. The ones that didn't look cheap were out of reach.
So we stopped shopping and started asking why. Most of what you pay for a leather bag isn't leather — it's the brand name, the retailer's cut, the wholesaler's cut, and the marketing that convinces you the markup is craftsmanship.
We thought we could take out everything except the bag.
February 2020
We booked the flight before we knew what we were doing.
Neither of us had a background in leather. What we had was a notebook, a list of tanneries, and the stubbornness to go and ask in person instead of taking a supplier's word for it over email.
The airport was half empty. Everyone was wearing masks and none of us understood yet what that meant. We got on the plane anyway.
Tuscany
Then we spent the week with our hands on hides.
We turned hides over under the window light and asked the questions we'd been getting vague answers to for months. Why one hide costs three times another. What "corrected" actually means. How to tell by touch when a surface has been sanded and covered.
We left knowing what we wanted our bags to be made of. Everything Leathry has made since gets held against what we saw that week — and if it doesn't hold up, we don't make it.
The first one
The LILA.
It came out of the notebook we carried through Tuscany, and it has gone viral more than once since. We still make it. We've never redesigned it. It's still the bag we hand to a friend who asks where to start.
Where it's made
Fast forward: we build them ourselves now.
We didn't start with a factory. Today we have our own production line in Udaipur, India, with dozens of people on the floor who cut, stitch, and finish every bag that leaves us.
Not a sourcing agent. Not a middleman we found online and hope is doing the right thing. Our bags are made in our building, on our line, by people whose names we know. That's the whole reason we can price the way we do: there is nobody standing between us and the bag.

The leather
Full-grain and top-grain. Nothing below that.
Full-grain is the hide untouched — nothing sanded off, every mark it earned still on it. Top-grain is the same hide with the surface refined, and it's what makes a pressed croc or a textured finish possible at all: you can't emboss a pattern into a surface you've left alone. When a Leathry bag is top-grain, that's a design decision, not a downgrade.
What you'll never find here is bonded leather, "genuine leather" sleight of hand, or PU pretending to be a hide. Those are the grades that peel. Ours age.
Shipping
It ships from Middletown, not from a boat.
Our bags sit in our own warehouse in Middletown, New York — not with a drop-shipper, and not in a container somewhere when you place the order. Domestic shipping is free and arrives in 5–7 business days.
If something isn't right, you have 30 days.
Affordable was never the compromise. It was the point.
We won't cut the leather grade to hit a price. We won't add a logo where it doesn't belong. And we won't ask you to pay for a name instead of a bag.
